There are myriads of answers for this question. Personally speaking, I find design, at its most basic level, essential for creating choices. To truly bring to light the importance of design, let’s imagine for a moment, a world where the airports and road systems have no signage, where food has no proper labeling on the outside of the box or no photographs of the product, where companies have no logos, or where magazines don’t exist.
But to clear the air, I need to first address what is design. Here’s what a typical conversation with a stranger goes like…
Stranger: So, what do you do for a living?
Me: I’m a graphic designer
Stranger: Oh, so you design logos?
Me: After a sigh, yes, but that’s only 10% of what I do.
The long answer is graphic design is found in every space we live in. Company logos, packaging of your favourite foods and cosmetics, signage in the mall or on the roads, greeting cards, magazines, books, cd art, posters of your favourite rock bank, t-shirts… there is a touch of graphic design everywhere.
Because of design we are able to distinguish one product from another, one company from another. We are able to capture the essence of something and create a market for it. We are able to drive competition. Because of design we are able to beautify our surroundings, find our way in a crowded city, create a statement. And let’s not forget, to designers like myself, design is important because there is nothing else I’d rather be doing.
